The Spirituality of Jane Austin
We are delighted to announce that the Rev Prebendary Paula Hollingsworth, Sub Dean of Wells Cathedral, is launching her book here at Wells Cathedral following Evensong on Thursday 27 April at 6pm.
The book explores Jane Austen’s life story and her writings through the lens of spirituality – examining how important to Jane and to the heroines and heroes she created were values, life lived beyond the material world, and an inner path that enables a person to discover the essence of his or her inner being. Key experiences in Jane’s own life are considered, including her father’s open attitude which enabled the young Jane to read very widely, her ‘wilderness years’ in Bath and Southampton when she was unable to write, and her return to a village parish where her writing life took off. We see how in her later novels and written prayers Jane Austen’s spirituality becomes more explicitly Christian – and the nature of her Christian spirituality is explored in relation to the context of the Church of England of her day. The book is currently available on Amazon, Waterstones and Blackwells online stores.
