Wells
Cathedral has maintained a choral tradition virtually
unbroken for over 800 years. Boys and men for all of
that time have sung the services, and in 1994 the choral
foundation at Wells was greatly enriched by the addition
of the girls choir. The choir sings a wide repertoire
of music that ranges from the glorious masterpieces
of the Renaissance period to the finest choral works
of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The daily witness of the cathedral focuses on the Daily
Offices and in particular the service of Choral Evensong,
the backbone of which is the singing of the Psalms,
with all the drama and powerful range of emotions that
those ancient words of praise possess. The combination
of the words of the liturgy sung in the English choral
tradition in a building as magnificent as Wells provides
beauty and glory in the worship and adoration of God
a wonderful experience.
Wells Cathedral Choir consists of eighteen boy and eighteen
girl choristers and twelve men. The history of the choir
is at least as old as the present building; the records
of the Vicars Choral go back to 1136 and it is known
that there were boys singing at Wells even earlier.
