STAINED GLASS TALKS
An historical stained glass walk round the Cathedral gives a spectacular view of the development of the glassmaker's art from the 13th to the early 20th centuries, with a hiatus only in the 18th century. The remains of the original medieval glazing programme contain outstanding examples of this ancient art, notably the Jesse Window in the Quire which dates back to c1340 and the Lady Chapel glass which is a survival from the early years of that century.
Not to be missed are the Resurrection figures in the Quire and the Chapter House, which repeat in stained glass the subject of carving on the West Front which spell out the main theme of the Cathedral. The early 16th century continental glass from Rouen is another fine highlight; and the windows installed in the 19th and early 20th centuries continue the Cathedral's tradition of selecting some of the foremost artists to beautify the building.
Window of the Month talks take place from April to the end of October on Wednesdays at 10.40 amd 11.10 am and Saturdays at 11.15 am.
PS It is probably a good idea to check with the Office (01749 674483) that these talks are still scheduled.
