Tours and Groups
We are delighted to be able to offer a range of tour options for our visitors which can help to add to your enjoyment and appreciation of the Cathedral:
Free Daily Scheduled Tours:
On most days of the year (Monday to Saturday), regular, scheduled tours of the Cathedral are available for our individual visitors with one of our highly trained guides. They are free of charge, last approximately one hour and are designed to provide a general overview of the highlights which make Wells unique among English Cathedrals. There is a limit to how many people our guides can accommodate on these tours so they are not suitable for large groups.
Simply gather by our ‘Tour’ sign in the nave before the tour is scheduled to begin.
Free Weekly Walks (Saturday and Wednesday mornings, April-October):
In addition to our daily scheduled tours Wells Cathedral’s FREE weekly stained glass and embroidery walks take place most Saturday and Wednesday mornings from April to October and showcase the Cathedral’s unique stained glass and beautiful embroideries.
Starting at 11.10am and 11.40am respectively, each tour lasts 20 minutes and no booking is required; simply join us in the entrance area of the Cathedral to join the tour of your choice.
A different theme for each tour is offered each month; see our Weekly Walks pages for more details. And why not make a morning of it by taking both tours and rounding your visit off with a refreshing cup of coffee in our Cathedral café?
Fixed Date Special Interest Tours:
A number of special interest tours run on specific dates during the year which can be booked by anyone. Our team of tour guides are experts on the Cathedral and their specialist subjects, injecting every tour with fascinating stories and insights into this unique place. Our themes include stained glass, stone carvings, gothic architecture, embroideries and our chained library. Each fixed date special interest tours lasts up to 1.5 hours and costs 10 per person.
Entry to the Cathedral
While admission to the Cathedral is free (other than pre-booking a tour), donations are very welcome. English Cathedrals receive no regular funding from the Government or the Church of England towards maintenance, restoration and development work. Here at Wells that means we have to raise £4,500 per day so please do consider making a donation.

Make a Day of It
Our Cathedral café is a relaxing, self-service eatery boasting views to the magnificent West Front of Wells Cathedral and over the tranquil moat of the Bishop’s Palace. Our food is freshly prepared and baked by our team in the Cathedral kitchen each day – including our homemade bread! – using local Somerset and Fairtrade produce wherever possible.
Our two shops stock a vast range of products including books, cards, CDs, gifts, pictures, chocolates, Somerset Lavender, tapestries and jewellery. Our first shop is situated in the Cathedral’s new Entry Cloister; our second is located in the heart of the city in Wells Market Place.
All profits from the café and our shops go to supporting the work of the Cathedral.
