The Overseer of the Estate

Adrian I'Anson

Prebendary Adrian I’Anson

The duties of the second lay member of the Chapter include having oversight of the Cathedral Estate which comprises Vicars’ Close, Canons’ Close and the Dean’s Lodgings, together with other buildings around the precincts of the Cathedral. This role is also responsible for the Cathedral’s commitment to issues of social justice. A third part of this position involves the publication of the Cathedral’s monthly news-sheet Chapter & Verse. This is a useful means of communicating the huge variety of events taking place in the Cathedral month by month.

Adrian was born in Sunderland in 1948.  He qualified as a solicitor in 1973 and practiced in local government, finally at Mendip District Council.  Having taken early retirement in 2000, Adrian and his wife, Mary, then spent two years in Eritrea with Voluntary Service Overseas, teaching English at a secondary school. Returning to the UK, Adrian spent some time monitoring elections in Eastern Europe and Asia. He then spent six years working as a Planning Inspector and retired for the second time in 2011. Adrian and Mary have two adult children and a grand-daughter.
