The Keeper of the Fabric

Gill Hawkings

Prebendary Gill Hawkings

The role of Keeper of the Fabric includes chairing the Works Progress Committee, supporting the Clerk of Works, attending FAC (Fabric Advisory Committee) meetings and sitting on the Friends’ Council and Preservation Trust. It also involves the oversight of Cathedral Sidesmen and Stewards.

From 1984 to her retirement in December 2008 Gill worked for a local firm of solicitors, and from 1996 was Clerk to the Registrar of the Diocese (the senior partner of the firm). She was also Assistant Secretary of the DAC (Diocesan Advisory Committee) from which roles she developed her interest in church buildings and ecclesiastical law. She has worshipped at the Cathedral since 1983 and in 2009 she was invited to join the Chapter at Wells Cathedral as a Lay Member. She is delighted to be able to put her knowledge of church buildings to good use as Keeper of the Fabric. During her time in Wells she has been involved with Relate, a local housing association for homeless young people and Somerset Churches Trust. Gill is married to Chris and they have four children.
