Prebendary Dr Paul Richards
The Administrator at Wells Cathedral is the Chief Executive Officer. The role is to execute the strategy and policies set by the Chapter. It is therefore all embracing across the Cathedral’s many activities, covering the day-to-day and those that are one-off. Day to day activities include responding to the needs of all our stakeholders: congregation; volunteers; partners in the Diocese, City and County; ensuring, inter alia, services, concerts and other events are properly planned and organised; staff and volunteers are managed effectively; and finances are in robust order. One-off activities include major conservation projects and media events.
Paul is an experienced manager and consultant having worked in a variety of organisations in the UK and overseas. These have included Macmillan Cancer Support, Centrica (at the time owners of British Gas and the AA), PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Conoco (the American oil company). As a consultant, he worked in companies including Railtrack, Esso, CAA, and the Post Office.
Having read Mathematics at Christ Church, Oxford, his career began in the Meteorological Office, during which time his research led to the award of a PhD in 1980. His work involved some of the modelling techniques that are the foundation of the computer based tools now used for climate prediction. One of the highlights of his varied career was a three year posting to Egypt, where he ran the computer department for Conoco. As a consultant, he then also worked in Kuwait, other Gulf countries, Africa and the European Commission.
Born the son of a Church of England clergyman, he has been associated with the church all his life and before moving to Wells was Churchwarden at his local parish church in Purley, Surrey. Paul is married to Alison and has two grown-up daughters.
