The Very Revd John Clarke

The Dean is the leader of the Chapter and with them he sets the priorities of the cathedral, ensuring that its resources are used wisely. He works with paid staff and volunteers to achieve standards of excellence in all the varied departments and activities of cathedral life. At Wells the Dean is also Chair of Governors of Wells Cathedral School, an independent school with 700 students and one of the four specialist music schools in England

John Clarke has been the Dean of Wells since 2004. He has held a variety of positions since his ordination in 1976. After a curacy in Newcastle-upon Tyne he worked in Scotland for eight years before spending a year of theological study in Greece. He was Vicar of St. Mary’s Battersea in South London until 1997 when he became Principal of Ripon College Cuddesdon near Oxford. Here he was responsible for training clergy for the ministry of the Church of England and other churches of the Anglican Communion. He is married to Cressida Nash and they have three children.
