CATHEDRAL PEAL OF BELLS |
| |
Wells Cathedral has the heaviest ring of ten
bells in the world. These bells are now hung in the South West, or
Harewell, Tower although originally a small number of bells were hung
in the lantern, i.e. the lower portion of the central tower, soon after
it was built in around 1220. They were moved out when the central tower
began to sink around 1338 but it was not until around 1415 that six
bells were hung or re-hung in the South West Tower. The others have
been added since.
Bishop Harewell (1366-1386) gave two-thirds
of the cost of building the South West Tower and he also gave two bells
- a new tenor known as ‘Harewell’ and another called Little Harewell.
Harewell, the great Wells tenor of 56 ¼ cwt, has been recast
many times.
