INTRODUCTION

For over a thousand years Christians have worshipped in the City of Wells, and for nearly 800 years in the Cathedral Church of St. Andrew. The Cathedral Foundation still worships each day throughout the year.

The Cathedral is also the place the Bishop has his chair. The word "cathedra", in Greek means "chair" and more especially a chair on which the teacher sat. When the Cathedral teaches it is in the name of the Bishop.

In the Cathedral too there are the great acts of worship for the diocese; for the whole church; or indeed for the nation. Into this holy place come many individuals and varied groups to give thanks, to celebrate or to mourn.
