Fond Farewells

As the academic year draws to a close, we bid a fond farewell to a number of familiar faces, young and old, whose dedication and commitment have been much appreciated:

The Precentor, The Revd Canon Nicholas Jepson-Biddle has announced that he and his family will be leaving Wells in the summer to make their home in Abingdon, Oxfordshire where his wife Joanna has a new posting. After 10 years here at Wells, this is a new adventure for them, and while very sorry to see them go — we wish them every blessing in pastures new. Nicholas will be presiding and preaching for the last time as Precentor at the Cathedral Eucharist on Sunday 6 August, with a presentation to follow. A date for your diary!

If you would like to contribute to a gift for Nicholas, please drop your contribution in to the Cathedral Offices or the Virgers’ Vestry in a sealed envelope, marked with ‘Precentor’s Collection’ by Monday 31 July.

Alongside the Precentor, The Reverend Canon Rosalind Paul reaches a ‘significant’ birthday in August and will be retiring from her role as Residentiary Canon. We are immensely grateful for Rosalind’s ministry among us, and particularly for her leadership of all things pastoral.

Rosalind’s final service will be the Cathedral Eucharist at 10.30 a.m. on Sunday 27 August and will give us opportunity to express our gratitude to her. The good news is that it is not goodbye! Rosalind is not moving far away and will receive the Bishop’s permission to officiate and so be able to offer ministry amongst us in a different capacity.

If you would like to contribute to a gift for Rosalind, please drop your contribution in to the Cathedral Offices or the Virgers’ Vestry in a sealed envelope, marked with ‘Canon Pastor’s Collection’ by Monday 21 August.

We would also like to thank those who are leaving the Cathedral Music Foundation at the end of the academic year, or who have departed during the course of it: Choristers Charlie, Samuel, Joseph, Rosie, Naomi, Maddie, and Belinda; Choral Scholar, Solomon; Vicar Choral, David; and Acting Assistant Director of Music, Adam.

We are deeply grateful to them for their commitment, dedication, hard work, and marvellous music making, and are very grateful to them and their families for all that they have given to the Choir and Cathedral. We wish them all the best of luck for the future!

Warm Welcomes

We look forward to commissioning two new Priest Vicars at the Cathedral Eucharist on Sunday 2 July: The Reverend Mary Lewis, known to many at the Cathedral already and The Reverend Prebendary Narinder Tegally, Lead Senior Chaplain of the Royal United Hospitals, Bath.

We are also immensely grateful to the Sub Dean Mary Bide who has agreed to assume the essential responsibilities of the Precentor in the interim before the appointment of a new Canon Precentor. Mary brings the experience of having previously been Precentor at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford.

And in the Cathedral Music Foundation, we look forward to welcoming new probationary Choristers, a new organ organ Scholar, and Alto, Tenor, and Bass Choral Scholars from September. More details to be announced over the summer.
