90 Years of the Friends of Wells Cathedral

90 Years of the Friends of Wells Cathedral

June 2023

“It is a truth universally acknowledged” observed a one-time Dean of Lincoln (with apologies to Jane Austen), “that a Cathedral must be in want of Friends.”  Dean Richard Malden obviously thought so when he became Dean of Wells in 1933 and he set about founding the Friends of Wells Cathedral.

This year the Friends celebrate their ninetieth anniversary.  The Friends Festival Weekend (which takes place at the beginning of June) will be include extra events such as an address by the Patron (Bishop Michael), and an Anniversary Dinner, as well as the normal tours and talks.

Over the past nine decades, the Friends have supported projects small and great at Wells Cathedral.  From the embroideries in the Quire to the Chapter House, stained glass to administrative help for the Chapter, garden plants to the Friends Building.  The Friends are now running the Grand Organ Appeal to raise funds for the refurbishment and renovation of the Cathedral Organ.

On Friday 9 June, there is an opportunity to celebrate with the Friends and support the Grand Organ Appeal at a concert entitled Wells Night at the Proms.  The concert, which has been organized in collaboration with Wells Cathedral Oratorio Society, will be a mixture of Organ and Choral classics and audience participation.   Tickets are £15.00, available soon via Eventbrite.

If you are not already a Friend, details of how to join can be found at www.wellsfriends.org or membership forms can be found on the Friends stand in the Cathedral.

There is still time to join before the Anniversary Festival Weekend!
