Wells Cathedral Appoints New Assistant Director of Music

Friday 17 November 2023

The Chapter of Wells Cathedral is delighted to announce the appointment of Carolyn Craig as Assistant Director of Music at Wells Cathedral from April 2024.

Carolyn Craig is currently Organ Scholar of Westminster Abbey, a position she has held since September 2023. Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, and with degrees from Indiana and Yale Universities, Carolyn is a former organ scholar at both Truro Cathedral and Westminster Cathedral and now maintains a busy schedule of international tours, broadcasts and teaching alongside her duties at Westminster Abbey. She has also recently been appointed as a Junior Fellow of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire from January 2024.

As Assistant Director of Music, Carolyn will be the principal organist for Cathedral services, will play a key part in the training of the Choristers, and will direct Wells Cathedral Chamber Choir.

Alexander Hamilton, Acting Director of Music at Wells Cathedral, said:

‘I am very pleased indeed that Carolyn Craig has been appointed as the new Assistant Director of Music at Wells Cathedral. We were fortunate to interview a strong field of candidates for this vital role in our busy Music Department. Carolyn is a superlative musician, and both her skill and warmth shone through during the selection process. As a former Organ Scholar of Westminster Abbey myself, I know that her work there will provide the perfect preparation for her new role here. I look forward to welcoming Carolyn to our team in Wells and to working closely alongside her when she arrives in April 2024.’

Andrew Nethsingha, Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey, and former Assistant Organist at Wells Cathedral, said:

‘I am absolutely delighted that our Organ Scholar, Carolyn Craig, is to take up the post of Assistant Director of Music at Wells Cathedral in April. She is a superlative musician – exceptional as organist, choral conductor, teacher, colleague – and most importantly, a great human being! All of us at Westminster Abbey are very proud of Carolyn’s achievement, and it gives me particular personal pleasure as I held the same job in Wells thirty years ago! Well done, Carolyn!’

Carolyn Craig, Assistant Director of Music Elect at Wells Cathedral, said:

‘I am honoured and delighted to have been appointed Assistant Director of Music at Wells Cathedral. Wells Cathedral has a long tradition of musical excellence, which I have admired for years, as well as an established reputation for being forward-looking. I am excited to contribute to daily worship in this historic Cathedral, and to become part of the Cathedral, School, and wider communities in Wells; the warmth of the people and place was overwhelming at the interview. Alexander Hamilton, Acting Director of Music, has led the music programme brilliantly, and it will be a privilege to join his team. I am sorry to be leaving Westminster Abbey, where I have been truly inspired, and am grateful to Andrew Nethsingha for his support. I look forward to making Wells my home.’
