Cathedral choir arrangements for the start of the new academic year

The Cathedral Chapter has determined that it will not seek to appoint an Organist and Master of the Choristers for the start of the new academic year and so an early advertisement of the post is not likely. A little time will be taken to reflect and to build a new strategic vision for the future before a new appointment is made. It is Chapter’s hope that others will be part of the review in due course as making excellent music is, as we all know, a collaborative and creative endeavour.

Chapter is delighted to announce that Jeremy Cole, our very talented Assistant Organist, will continue to lead the Choir as he has done so ably for much of this current academic year. David Stevens, the newly appointed Assistant Sub-Organist, and former Director of Music at Belfast Cathedral, will also play a key role. David joins the Cathedral on 1 September 2019 and we are very much looking forward to his arrival. A further temporary appointment will also be made to ensure musical excellence here at Wells is maintained in the short term whilst a longer term vision evolves.

As we move forward Chapter’s primary concern is the wellbeing and musical fulfilment of its musicians, both junior and adult as well as ensuring the future of the music of the Cathedral which is at the heart of its life and ministry. We hope you will forgive the interim nature of these arrangements whilst the reflection takes place and I write to you now in order to reassure you of our commitment to give choristers an unrivalled musical education.

As this academic year draws to a close I would like to thank you for all you do to support the Cathedral Choir; it is much appreciated. I also want to put on record my and the Chapter’s gratitude for the way in which the music team and the musicians in the Cathedral have worked to have a care for the children and to maintain the quality of music in the Cathedral’s worship.

The Very Reverend Dr John Davies
