Classic FM 5 Star acclaim

August’s edition of the widely read Classic FM magazine gives a 5 star review for the latest CD release from Wells Cathedral. Read here the sections on ‘performance’ and the overall ‘verdict’.

The Performance

This disc is a double triumph Wells. Not only does it maintain the world-class standard of their recent recordings, it also secures beyond doubt for them a reputation as the must-have interpreters of contemporary British sacred repertoire. Take their atmospheric ‘Tremunt videntes angeli’. They sing it as if its in their bones, their tone rounded, bright and English-sounding. The part-balancig is perfect, textures lucid, and everyone is both bang in tune, and in full control of Macmillan’s tricky Scottish folk-influenced ornamentations. Vaughn’s performance is just as exciting, particularly the virtuosic ‘Le tombeau de Georges Rouault’ for solo organ.

The Verdict

If you only ever buy one disc of Macmillan’s choral works, then make it this one. In terms of both choral performance and in displaying MacMillan’s tremendous stylistic range, it can’t be beaten.

The disc is on the Hyperion Records label, CDA 67867.
