Director of Development Vacancy

Wells Cathedral is seeking to recruit a highly effective Director of Development to establish and build (essentially from scratch) a fundraising platform which has a target for income growth of at least £2m per year. This level of funding is required to satisfy the future development aspirations and priorities of the Cathedral, both in terms of core funding (to support infrastructure development, recurring capital expenditure at an operational level, &c) and, through grants from the Wells Cathedral Trust, major project funding to enable a pipeline of ambitious building and conservation initiatives.

In addition to growing further a variety of ‘low level relational’ and ‘non-relational’ income streams, a major priority will be to identify and cultivate major donors, develop long-term successful relationships with key individuals, and to work towards securing substantial donations for the Cathedral in order to increase philanthropic income, thus enabling it to achieve its ambitious development priorities.

To be successful in this role you will be an experienced development professional with a strong track record in securing major gifts (six and seven figure sums), with a confident approach to achieving ambitious income targets. You will possess diplomacy, creativity and outstanding communication skills, as well as the ability to operate comfortably in a complex institution with multiple stakeholders. You have the credibility and confidence to influence at the highest level, and a collaborative and flexible working style is essential.
