Children’s Festival 2018 – ‘Noah and the Flood’

The Children’s Festival on Saturday 20 January was a huge success this year and focused on the theme ‘Noah and the Flood’. Approximately 300 children and adults from uniformed groups, church groups and families attended. The day started with an animal trail inviting children to find the animals in the carvings, textiles and glass all around the Cathedral.

Developed in partnership with the Diocese of Bath and Wells, collective worship at the opening was led by John Davis, Dean of Wells.  Andy Levett, from the Go Team, told an interactive story of ‘Noah and the Flood’ which got everyone making some animal noises!

Children took part in a carousel of different activities: circus skills in the nave, crafts in the transepts, music in the Chapter House, live animals from Puxton Park, reflection in the Lady Chapel and a workshop on flooding with Christian Aid. The children helped make a huge Ark out of scrap materials; in the closing service they paraded behind it, wearing their animal masks. Complete with a rainbow altar frontal and prayers written on fishes in netting, the nave was transformed into a scene from Noah and the Flood, ready for the next part of the interactive story read by Cheryl Govier from the Go Team.

A band comprising of 4 young people from churches in West Somerset led the children and families in sung worship in the afternoon. They are all part of ‘Impetus’, a Sunday evening worship initiative for young people that happens termly in Watchet and Minehead. The band members are Sarah Scyner – vocals & guitar, Hannah Levett – vocals & guitar, Ellie Scyner – bass guitar and Matt Levett – drums.

Bishop Ruth and Bishop Peter supported the event throughout the day, with Bishop Ruth leading the closing worship.
