White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack
Peggy McIntosh
Peggy McIntosh is an American anti-racism activist and associate director of the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women.
Written in 1988, this essay address the way in which racism is taught as something which puts people of colour at a disadvantage, rather than putting white people at an advantage. Peggy described this white privilege as an ‘invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions’ that we are trained to remain oblivious to. The essay also contains a list of 50 white privileges that Peggy became aware of in her daily life.
