A new choir – Song Squad Minis

If you know a child aged 5 or 6 who loves singing, they may like to join our new choir – Wells Cathedral Song Squad Minis! This new training choir for the well-established Song Squad gives younger children the opportunity to sing to a high standard and perform concerts both on their own and alongside Song Squad. No audition is required, children just need to enjoy singing. The choir meets on Tuesdays in term time from 4.30-5.00pm in the Cathedral’s Education Room.

About Tricia Rees-Jones

Tricia was born and brought up in Yorkshire where she studied piano and viola, being co-principal viola in the Leeds Youth Orchestra and repetiteur for the Leeds Youth Chorale.  She was appointed a Choral Scholar at Royal Holloway College, London where she read music and this fuelled her passion for choral singing.  This led her to sing with a number of chamber choirs in London including the Joyful Company of Singers with whom she won the Sainsbury’s (now BBC) Choir of the World competition and several other major competitions throughout Europe.  With this choir she also made a number of successful commercial recordings of music by, among others, Poulenc, Jonathan Harvey, Holst and Percy Grainger, and sang at major venues and festivals in the UK and beyond.

In 2001 she moved back to Yorkshire where she was Director of Junior School Music at Giggleswick School combining a teaching career with directing a number of choirs including the Langcliffe Singers, Viva Voce youth choir and the Giggleswick Choral Society as well as numerous school choirs and ensembles.   She also created the charity ‘Tutti’, which brought together teenage instrumentalists, conservatoire students and professional musicians in innovative events and projects including a Baroque Strings weekend.

She is an active member of the Association of British Choral Directors and was instrumental in the creation of the innovative Cambiata North West choir, specifically for teenage boys whose voices are changing.  They appeared in the War Horse Prom at the Royal Albert Hall in 2014 and performed to great acclaim at the RNCM in August 2015.

Now based in Somerset she directs the Wells Cathedral Junior Choir and The Swan Singers chamber choir, and continues her singing with the Wells Cathedral Oratorio Society under Matthew Owens, and Vox Coelestis with Nigel Short.
