New Chancellor Announcement
On behalf of the Bishop of Bath and Wells and the Cathedral Chapter I am delighted to announce the appointment of The Reverend Dr Rob James, Vicar of Newnham-on-Severn with Awre and Blakeney in the Diocese of Gloucester since March 2014, as the next Chancellor of Wells Cathedral.
When Rob studied at Westcott House Theological College he did a placement at Ely Cathedral in the Education Department and attended Chapter. As part of his ordained ministry he has built strong connections with Gloucester Cathedral and both experiences fed his calling to Cathedral ministry. Engaged in teaching modules on Doctrine, Biblical Studies and the Reformation for Ripon College, Cuddesdon since September 2015 to date, Rob believes that prayer and theology are the twin engines of the church and was attracted to the role at Wells as he wants to engage the wider church and the public in theological discussion and learning. Rob is also very excited about leading the Education Department to shape the future of educational visits with them and relishes the prospect of becoming a governor of Wells Cathedral School. Lastly as a Vicar he is passionate about the visitor experience when the public visit his churches and recognises the importance of allowing people to be both tourists and pilgrims, and indeed inviting them to be pilgrims.
Rob will be installed at Wells Cathedral on Monday 25th November 2019 at 5:15pm by the Bishop of Bath and Wells at a special service of Evensong and anticipates commencing his ministry full-time on December 19, 2019. We are very much looking forward to having Rob as a colleague and I am sure you will give him and his wife Jean a warm welcome upon arrival, and it goes without saying that he and we would be delighted to see all of you who are able to come at his installation.
The Very Revd Dr John Davies, Dean of Wells
