Join us over a two-week period to explore some of the historical, geopolitical, theological, cultural and ethical issues that underpin Black Lives Matter (BLM) in the South West and the UK.

Speakers include (and available to answer pre-submitted questions for a Q and A event on Tuesday 16th March):

  • The Revd. Dr. Carlton Turner Theology Tutor, The Queen’s Foundation, Birmingham: ‘Beyond Unconscious Bias? Listening Carefully to the BLM Movement’.
  • Alex Raikes, MBE DL Strategic Director of Stand Against Racism & Inequality (SARI) – ‘Racism and Hate Crime in the South West’
  • Dr Madge Dresser, Honorary Professor in Historical Studies at the University of Bristol: ‘The legacy of Transatlantic Slavery in Bristol and beyond‘
  • Nadia Lewis-Gorton and Euten Lindsay from Devon Development Education and The Cultural Champions: ‘Windrush and me’
  • Dr Shawn Sobers, Associate Professor, Film and Journalism at University of the West of England: ‘Uncovering Black voices through film and photography’
  • Vienna Ashley-Watts and Amilee J, Organisers from BLM Taunton and Andrew Jeffery from BLM Bridgwater: ‘Discussing the journey from rural isolation and discrimination to empowerment to take action for racial justice’

 

Audience: Students studying History, Politics, Law, Sociology, Philosophy and Ethics, RS, Geography, English Literature, Art, Photography, Health and Social Care and more.

 

Key Conference Dates:

Tuesday 23rd February Booking deadline

Tuesday 2nd March Pre-recorded speeches and resources for use in school will be uploaded and remain available to use until 19th March.

Tuesday 9th March Students submit questions to the speakers using the Questions Form or sending in audio or video files.

Tuesday 16th March: Question Time with the panel members using the pre-submitted questions posed by students.  This will be uploaded onto the conference webpage and remain available until 19th March.

 

Cost: £3.60 per pupil (free places available for those in receipt of Free School Meals)

Bookings: Bookings may either be taken via the Group booking form (payable by invoice) or via Eventbrite (suitable for individuals or groups wishing to pay by credit/debit card)
