Looking for things to do in Somerset? We offer a range of tours of Wells Cathedral which can help to add to your enjoyment of your visit to us and to Wells – all under one glorious roof!
High Parts Tours:
Climb the spiral staircase to walk in the footsteps of Wells Cathedral masons with the behind-the-scenes tours of Wells Cathedral’s High Parts; one of the most memorable things to do in Wells! Regular tours run throughout the week. Click here for more information.
Chained Library Tours:
Wells Cathedral has one of the few chained libraries in Britain. It is especially attractive as it is still in its original location built in the 1450s, although the current bookshelves and chains are 17th Century. Each tour lasts a full hour and a half. Places do need to be pre-booked via Eventbrite and maximum tour numbers apply
Free Daily Tours:
On most days of the year (Monday to Saturday), regular, scheduled tours of the Cathedral are available for our individual visitors with one of our highly trained guides. They are free of charge, last approximately one hour and are designed to provide a general overview of the highlights which make Wells unique among English Cathedrals. There is a limit to how many people our guides can accommodate on these tours so they are not suitable for large groups.
Simply gather by our ‘Tour’ sign in the nave before the tour is scheduled to begin.
Free Weekly Walk Tours (Saturday and Wednesday mornings, April-October):
In addition to our daily guided tours Wells Cathedral’s FREE weekly stained glass, stone carvings and embroidery walks take place most Saturday and Wednesday mornings from April to October. Each tour lasts 20 minutes and no booking is required; simply join us in the entrance area of the Cathedral to join the tour of your choice at the time stated.
A different theme for each tour is offered each month; see our Weekly Walks pages for more details.
Entry to the Cathedral
While we do not charge for entry (other than pre-booking a tour), donations are very welcome. English Cathedrals receive no regular funding from the Government or the Church of England towards maintenance, restoration and development work. Here at Wells that means we have to raise £4,500 per day so please do consider making a donation if you are able.
Looking for a tour which would be suitable for a Group booking? Please click here for more information or call 01749 671663.
Guided tours can be tailored for physically or visually impaired group visitors if booked in advance, including a sensory tour which can include incense. Please contact our Visits team on 01749 671663 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Make a Day of It
Our Cathedral café is a relaxing, self-service eatery boasting views to the magnificent West Front of Wells Cathedral and over the tranquil moat of the Bishop’s Palace. Our food is freshly prepared and baked by our team in the Cathedral kitchen each day – including our homemade bread! – using local Somerset and Fairtrade produce wherever possible.
Our shop stocks a vast range of products including books, cards, CDs, gifts, pictures, chocolates, Somerset Lavender, tapestries and jewellery. All profits from the café and our shop go to supporting the work of the Cathedral.
