Choral Evensong including Prayers for Peace and sung by The Choir of the Cathedral of St John, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

Date:
Saturday 4th August

Time:
17:15 - 18:15

Description:On 4th August 1918 King George V called a national day of prayer: in a time of great national difficulty and pain, it seemed a natural and good response. 100 days later World War One ended. On Saturday 4th August, at Evensong (5:15pm) Wells Cathedral will mark the centenary of that call to prayer and Cathedrals and churches across the country will begin 100 days of prayer for peace, reconciliation and hope. The anniversary and the days of prayer are commended by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Civic guests will be invited to Evensong here at Wells Cathedral on the 4th, but the service is also open to the wider public – so all are very welcome. The Choir of the Cathedral of St John is the visiting choir this week and will sing at this service. The Choir is recognised as one of the finest choral ensembles in the region. Tours form an important part of the Choir’s evangelism to the greater musical and liturgical community. The Cathedral Choir has sung in such prestigious venues as Saint Thomas’ Church, Fifth Avenue, New York City, Washington National Cathedral, St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, Canterbury Cathedral, St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, Southwark Cathedral, London and York Minster, Winchester Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. The choir is thrilled to be in residence at Wells for the week.
