Bishop Bekynton Commemoration Service

Sunday 13th January

15:00 - 16:00

Description: Bishop Bekynton was consecrated as Bishop of Bath and Wells in October 1443 and, while an important figure nationally, is perhaps best known locally for granting the gift of a free water supply to the residents of Wells. Our City is named after the springs (or wells) which rise within the grounds of the Bishop’s Palace and which still flow today – thanks to Bishop Bekynton – via channels through the market place and into the City. He also did much building here, both at the Cathedral and in the City. On the national stage he was King’s Secretary, Secretary of State, and Keeper of the Privy Seal. Choral Evensong is held in the Quire of Wells Cathedral and is sung by Wells Cathedral Choir during term time. This is open to the public and all are welcome.
