Francis of Assisi is among the best-known saints of the Church, revered for his passionate dedication to the Christian life. What is not widely known about him is the urge he felt to travel to the Islamic world and preach to Muslims. After a series of failed attempts, he eventually went with the Fifth Crusade to Damietta on the Nile Delta, and crossed from the Crusader lines to the Muslim camp to meet the Egyptian Sultan. This encounter took place in the autumn (probably) of 1219. To mark its 700th anniversary the Cathedral is holding an afternoon on St Francis and Islam. This will be on Wednesday 16 October, between 2.00 and 4.00 pm. It will comprise two parts. Professor David Thomas, Canon Theologian, will give a historical survey of the meeting between Francis and the Sultan, its background and consequences in Francis' life. Then, Br Clarke Berge SSF, Guardian of Hilfield Friary, Dorset, will reflect on the consequences of the meeting for interfaith relations today. There will be time for questions and discussion. This lecture will take place in the Education Room of the Cathedral. Tickets are £5 and are available to purchase on the door. The price of the ticket includes refreshments.
