Our Mission

Continuing 900 years of welcome

Mission and Values

At Wells Cathedral, our mission and purpose guide what we do as a church and organization, while our values shape how we do it.

Our Mission

With St. Andrew, who with his brother Simon Peter was called to follow Christ, Wells Cathedral is called to tell of the God who is Love. We want to be a beacon of hope and light, of life in Jesus Christ, infused by the Holy Spirit, serving churches and communities across the Diocese of Bath and Wells, the County of Somerset, and beyond.

We are a worshipping, living Cathedral Church, welcoming all visitors, groups, and individuals. To all who come, we offer sacred space for praise, prayer, and spiritual searching, in times of sadness and joy. We take our name from the Cathedra which is the very seat of the Bishop of Bath and Wells.

We minister in relationship with the Bishop, Diocese and other community partners to do all this, and to ensure that the work of the Cathedral reaches those in the greatest need.

Our Values

Rooted in Jesus Christ, scripture and the life of the Church of England we seek to live out our life together based on the following values. To be:

A faith-filled community — inspired by our Christian faith, learning and growing in faith and discipleship.

A welcoming community — offering an inclusive and hospitable welcome for all.

A caring community — serving our own community and the wider communities across the Diocese and County with compassion and love.

A respectful community — treating others with respect and openness, acting with integrity and inspiring trust in all we do.

Our Values are articulated in the light of varied consultation with the Cathedral community, the results of which were painted in our initial word cloud. The scriptural words of Isaiah 55:10-12, and the prayer of Thomas Ken, Bishop of Bath and Wells 1637-1711, give us further foundations for our work:

For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth, making it bud and flourish, so that it gives seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth; it will not return to me unfulfilled, but it will accomplish what delights me, and it will achieve that for which I sent it. For in joy will you go out, and in peace will you be led forth; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.

O God, make the door of this house wide enough to receive all who need human love and fellowship; narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and strife. Make its threshold smooth enough to be no stumbling-block to children, nor to straying feet, but rugged and strong enough to turn back the tempter’s power. God make the door of this house the gateway to your eternal kingdom. Amen.

We are together committed to ongoing reflection and prayerful review of this mission and values.
