Our Mission

Continuing 900 years of welcome

Mission and Values

Mission Statement

The Cathedral exists for the glory of God and as a sign of his kingdom in the world.

Objectives

To this end we are committed to:

– Offering a daily round of prayer and worship

– Enabling the Cathedral to be:

  • an instrument of God’s mission where the Christian faith is explored, practised, preached, taught and interpreted
  • a focus for the life of the Diocese of Bath and Wells and the ministry of the Bishop
  • a sacred place where all who come are welcomed and valued
  • a focal point for the life of our city, county and country: a witness of God’s justice, peace and love
  • a place where community is fostered
  • a place where the expression of God’s gifts of creativity is encouraged
  • a spiritual, musical and architectural inheritance to be conserved, enhanced and reinterpreted for this and future generations
  • a good steward of its financial, human and physical resources

Wells Cathedral Values

All our values are set in the context of the Christian belief and ethos of the Cathedral:

Spirituality

We seek to discern what God is saying to the world today and, by living with hope, demonstrate God’s love through the welcome, support and hospitality we show to all who come to the Cathedral.

Evolving Tradition

We celebrate a living connection to our historical roots in such a way that enables us to develop and evolve tradition as we face the challenges of the current and future generations.

Creative Excellence

We are committed to excellence in all we do through creativity, innovation and working to high standards that include respect for each other and compliance with external regulation and internal policies.

Collaboration

We actively seek to work together with colleagues both staff and volunteers, and with outside bodies with whom we share a common vision.

Learning

We seek to promote an understanding of our faith and heritage through a commitment to learning.
