Inspiring Communities Through Vicars’ Close

Vicars’ Close Activities and Events

Our Vicars’ Close Project is all about you! Through an inspired programme of creative events and activities, we are bringing together communities from across Somerset to explore, celebrate, and shape the future of one of Europe’s most amazing medieval streets. So if you love singing, telling stories, thinking creatively or simply being curious – this is for you!

Thank you to Lottery Players and The National Lottery Heritage Fund for making this amazing project possible.

If you are based in Somerset and excited about creativity, history, and community, we would love to hear from you. There are some amazing ways for you to join us in celebrating and shaping the future of Vicars’ Close, through our Vicars’ Close community engagement projects and activities.

Early Career Creatives:

Are you aged 18–25 and excited by creativity, culture, or history? The Vicars’ Close Project at Wells Cathedral is offering two paid placements for young people to join the team over 18 months and help shape a new heritage visitor experience.

As an Early Career Creative, you’ll work alongside experienced mentors to co-design activities, build leadership and curation skills, and represent the voices of young people in the project. No prior experience in creative or heritage work is needed — just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

Community Consultation Groups

We’re creating three new groups that reflect the diversity of Somerset, bringing in local voices to help shape the future of Vicars’ Close.

These groups will meet monthly from January to August 2026, offering a space for open conversation, creative thinking, and shared storytelling. Participants will help guide how Vicars’ Close is presented to future visitors, explore ways Wells Cathedral can better serve the wider community, and contribute their lived experiences to a project rooted in place and people. A financial contribution will be offered in recognition of your time and insight.

We’re especially keen to hear from individuals who may not have previously felt connected to the Cathedral — including young adults, disabled and neurodiverse people, carers, rural workers, and those from the Global Majority. Sessions can be attended in person or remotely, and applications are welcome in written, video, or voice note formats.

Closing date: Monday 10 November 2025, 10.00 a.m.
