Set in the city centre of Wells just a short walk from all major car parks and the bus station, and only 25 minutes from Castle Cary train station, The Cathedral offers a number of conference room facilities from as little as 10 delegates up to 110 delegates for a corporate champagne and canapé reception. Our three conference rooms combine historic elegance and corporate functionality.

Vicars’ Hall

Capacity: 60 (seated) / 100 (standing)

The picturesque fourteenth-century Vicars’ Hall, once the daily dining room of the Vicars Choral, physically connects the historic Vicars’ Close with the Cathedral. Accessed via two staircases, the hall is fully equipped for modern events, benefitting from a dedicated commercial kitchen and adjoining bathrooms.

Flexible seating options include round tables, cocktail tables, and modular rectangular tables, making it ideal for everything from coffee mornings, meetings and lectures, to parties and elegant wedding receptions.

With its rich history and warm, relaxed atmosphere, Vicars’ Hall is the perfect place for conversation, laughter and celebration — a venue that is truly felt as well as seen.

Undercroft

Capacity: 60 (seated) / 100 (standing)

Beneath the Chapter House lies the Undercroft, a striking space that never fails to spark conversation. Its sweeping stone arches and circular design create a setting that is both dramatic and welcoming, ideal for events that encourage mingling and connection.

By day, the Undercroft often hosts exhibitions, making the most of its open layout and natural flow. By evening, candlelight transforms the space into an atmospheric haven for social gatherings, receptions, or intimate celebrations.

Highly accessible and endlessly versatile, this historic gem offers a unique backdrop that blends centuries-old character with modern possibilities.

Camery Garden

Capacity: 200 (standing)

The Camery Garden is a beautiful enclosed green space within the Cathedral, brought to life by its floral borders, spectacular views of the Cathedral’s East End, and characterful ‘camera’, from which to catch a glimpse of the city’s eponymous wells.

It’s a space that can be used as for garden parties, sunlit socialising at wedding receptions, photoshoots, and much more.

Education Room

The Education Room is a bright, lofty space brought to life by its stunning modern-day woodwork, overlooking the beautiful architecture of the Cathedral and its gardens.

One of our most versatile and accessible spaces, the room is fully equipped for presentations, meetings and workshops, while maintaining all the charm and manoeuvrability needed for social occasions and celebrations.

The Tower Crossing of Wells Cathedral

Tower Crossing and Transepts

Framed by the Cathedral’s iconic Scissor Arches, the Tower Crossing offers a truly exceptional backdrop for social gatherings at the heart of the building.

This versatile space can accommodate large numbers of guests with ease, yet feels warm and embracing with its unique architecture. It is an ideal location for drinks receptions, corporate dinners, and memorable social occasions.

With larger events, this space is often used in conjunction with the Nave for refreshments and meet-and-greets.

The Loft Café

Situated above the Cathedral’s entry cloister, The Loft offers a distinctive and intimate venue for private hire. With stunning views of the West Front and the Bishop’s Palace moat, this characterful space is enhanced by striking artwork from local artists, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.

Ideal for drinks receptions, wakes, and small celebrations, The Loft combines elegance with a sense of calm, making it a perfect setting for memorable occasions.

Nave

Capacity: 800

The Nave is the Cathedral’s grand stage — a vast, awe-inspiring space beneath soaring arches and intricate ribbed vaulting. Perfect for large-scale ceremonies, concerts, and prestigious events, it combines breathtaking architecture with a sense of occasion that few venues can match.

Whether filled with candlelight or natural daylight streaming through stained glass, the Nave offers an unforgettable setting for moments that deserve nothing less than magnificent.

Lady Chapel

Tucked away behind the High Altar at the East end of the Cathedral, the Lady Chapel and Retroquire form one of the most serene and spiritually-resonant interior spaces. Its delicate stonework and kaleidoscopic stained glass create an intimate, contemplative atmosphere ideal for smaller ceremonies, blessings, or musical performances.

This space radiates elegance and serenity, offering a sense of sacred beauty that elevates any occasion — a hidden treasure for those seeking something truly special.

Quire

The Quire is the beating heart of the Cathedral, where much of the daily round of worship takes place. Its soaring arches and intricate wood and stonework create an awe-inspiring setting for intimate ceremonies and small concerts.

With collegiate (inward-facing) fixed seats arranged around the central aisle, the Quire offers a sense of closeness and community within the grandeur of the Cathedral— a truly unforgettable backdrop for life’s most meaningful moments.

Cloisters

The Cloisters are a living piece of medieval architecture, where sunlight dances through the stone tracery to illuminate three capacious vaulted walkways around the Cathedral’s inner garden, the Palm Churchyard.

This atmospheric space is perfect for drinks receptions, photography, exhibitions, and informal gatherings, offering a natural flow for guests to mingle and explore.
