Let brass and voice resound!
Join Somerset Chamber Choir for a celebration of Sir John Rutter’s 80th birthday year with a performance of his jubilant Gloria, a work filled with brass fireworks and joyful choral writing. Familiar to all, Rutter’s music captures hearts with its singable melodies and uplifting spirit.
The concert also features James Whitbourn’s evocative Son of God Mass; scored for choir, organ and soprano saxophone, it has been described by Classic Today as ‘a gem, a masterpiece’. At times contemplative and mysterious, at others soaring and exuberant, this music is exceptionally moving and always sensitive to the texts.
There will also be drama aplenty with brass and organ fanfares in James MacMillan’s Summae Trinitati and Gerald Finzi’s God is gone up which will perfectly complement works of peaceful reflection written by Paul Mealor and Cecilia McDowall.
Alongside Rachael Parvin (Head of Guildhall Young Artists Taunton and former student of multi-award-winning saxophonist John Harle) and Southwark Cathedral organist Simon Hogan, the acclaimed all-female trombone group Bones Apart will make this powerful programme sparkle as they lead a stellar brass ensemble whose members have played with numerous major national orchestras, as well as with musicians including Jamie Cullum, Sting and Tom Jones, and in film-scores from Skyfall to Harry Potter!
Don’t miss this evening of outstanding British music, performed by one of the county’s finest choirs and an extraordinary gathering of world-class musicians.
