You will firstly discover the meaning of the renowned West Front. Then to inside, to see a selection of the masons’ superlative work, whether structural or decorative. For instance, the enigmatic stiff-leaf capitals (Pevsner: “The best place in England [or elsewhere?] to study and enjoy ...”), headstops present or (missing?), corbels, roundels, piers, shafts, delicate frills, oddities – and the mysterious green men.
You may even glimpse the allied trades of carpenter, mortar-maker and blacksmith.
