Carpenter/Joiner

Permanent. Full Time

£20,459 per annum

Wells Cathedral is seeking a Carpenter/Joiner to join the Works Department.

Wells Cathedral is one of the great cathedrals of England, originally dating from the 1180’s but having been extended and modified through the centuries. As well as maintaining the Fabric of the Gothic cathedral building, the Chapter (the principal governing body) has responsibility for an Estate including Vicars’ Close, the Dean’s Lodging and the modern houses currently occupied by four Canons. The majority of the work on the Cathedral Fabric and Estate properties is undertaken by an in-house Works Department (‘Yard’) maintenance team under the leadership of the Clerk of the Works.

As part of the Yard team, you will work with colleagues or on your own to provide reactive and planned maintenance services, as required throughout the Fabric and Estate to ensure the operational continuity of the Cathedral. As the team Carpenter, you will undertake the carpentry and joinery works necessary to maintain and repair all aspects of the Fabric and Estate, taking instructions from and reporting to the Clerk of the Works. You will be a suitably qualified or experienced trade practitioner, ideally with some experience of working on historic Listed buildings.

Application forms should be returned to Human Resources via recruitment@bathwells.anglican.org or care of Diocesan Offices, the Old Deanery, Wells, Somerset BA5 2UG

Unique opportunity for boys to train as choristers at Wells Cathedral!

The internationally renowned Wells Cathedral Choir is looking for boys in current school years 3 and 4 to become choristers from September 2017.

The choir has a long, impressive history, having been formed over 1,100 years ago before the current medieval Cathedral was built! Boy choristers have sung at Wells since 909, with the girls’ choir being introduced relatively recently in only 1994.

In 2011 the choir an international jury from Gramophone Magazine voted Wells Cathedral Choir the greatest choir with children in the world, and the sixth greatest overall.

The choir’s principal and most important responsibility is singing the services at the Cathedral. All choristers are educated at Wells Cathedral School, for which scholarships and additional bursaries are available to assist with fees. Wells Cathedral School is one of the oldest schools in Europe, having been formed in 909 as a school for the Cathedral’s boy choristers. It is now one of the finest specialist musical schools in the country, and provides a first class academic education within its beautiful historic backdrop.

For more information and to arrange an informal audition, please telephone 01749 834213 or e-mail admissions@wells-cathedral-school.com
