Salary: £16,710 per annum based on 40 hours a week

Wells Cathedral is seeking to appoint a full time Virger to be the face of the Cathedral to visitors and worshippers on a daily basis, to offer a warm welcome to all who come to the Cathedral, to prepare for services, to lead processions, to prepare staging and rooms for events, to carry out cleaning and some light maintenance, and often, to manage the first response in a crisis.

The Cathedral is open seven days a week and has a very busy programme of worship, events, tours and exhibitions with over 270,000 visitors each year.

We are looking for a hard-working, flexible individual to be part of a small and friendly team.

The Virger will be provided with a house in Vicars’ Close, Wells rent-free and is required to reside there in order to properly perform his/her duties.

This post is subject to an occupational requirement that the holder be a committed Christian.

Vacancy for Countertenor Choral Scholar

The post runs from September 2018 to July 2019 and includes free housing in the beautiful medieval Vicars’ Close with a generous scholarship, extra fees package, and funding for singing lessons. Opportunities for work at Wells Cathedral School may be available.

Volunteer Café Assistant 

To assist the catering team in the Cathedral Café clearing and cleaning the tables for our customers. Hours that need to be covered are between 12noon and 2.30pm on the following days; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday but we would be interested in hearing from people who can help on just one day a week. The ideal Café Helper will have worked in a similar environment previously, although this is not essential.


A soup lunch and drink will be offered after the duty.

Volunteer Cathedral Welcomers and Duty Welcomers

We are currently recruiting for the roles of Cathedral Welcomer and Duty Welcomer. These are both voluntary roles.

Welcomers provide a warm, friendly and sensitive welcome to all who enter Wells Cathedral.  The role can include handing over an appropriate welcome leaflet, notifying visitors of guided tours and generally helping with directions.

The ideal volunteer is someone who is friendly, enjoys engaging with the public and has the ability to follow instruction, as well as being able to be flexible.
