Remembrance at Wells Cathedral

November 2024

Remembrance Sunday Eucharist
Sunday 10 November 2024, 10.30 a.m.

An Act of Remembrance at 11.00 a.m. will be woven into the Cathedral Eucharist starting at 10.30 a.m., with music by Elgar, Howells, and James MacMillan.

Fauré Requiem
Sunday 10 November 2024, 3.00 p.m.

The Cathedral Choir will sing with the Wells Cathedral School Chamber Choir to offer a devotional performance of Fauré’s Requiem, interspersed with readings, and with the now familiar and much appreciated ‘poppy drop’. Admission: free; retiring collection in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and Wells Cathedral.

Composed between 1887 and 1890, it is one of the most beloved choral works in the classical repertoire. Unlike traditional requiems that emphasise fear and judgment, Fauré’s setting focuses on peace and consolation. The work features a serene and uplifting tone, with notable movements like the “Pie Jesu,” which is particularly famous for its lyrical beauty. Fauré’s Requiem is a reflection of his belief in the comforting aspects of death rather than the dread of the afterlife. Its lasting appeal lies in its blend of emotional depth and melodic grace.
