Evening Fundraiser to push for Grand Organ Appeal first £1 million

The Friends of Wells Cathedral will be hosting a evening performance with an update on the progress of the Grand Organ Appeal, in a bid to raise a final £50,000 and meet the halfway mark of £1 million.

Thursday 19 September, 7.00 p.m.

The Friends of Wells Cathedral are glad to report that the Grand Organ Appeal has now reached £950,000 in donations and pledges. This means we are only £50,000 short of the first million pounds — our halfway point!

This is a great milestone that we hope to be able to reach and celebrate before the end of 2024. Thank you so much to so many of you for your generous support, which has helped us to get so close to this important point on our fundraising journey.

Unfortunately, the news about the current state of the organ is much less joyful; 25% of the instrument is not playable and will not be so until it is rebuilt. Further deterioration is inevitable.

The Grand Organ of Wells Cathedral is rapidly deteriorating

This sad news has only spurred us on to raise the funding as fast as we can. Our new Director of Music, Tim Parsons, will arrive in September and one of his first engagements, alongside the Assistant Director of Music Carolyn Craig, will be a concert in the Cathedral on Thursday 19 September at 7.00 p.m.

The evening will demonstrate the various ways in which our organ supports the musical life of the cathedral. We will hear the organ as a solo instrument, in conjunction with singers and other instruments, and supporting us all singing together.
