Chimney showing rebus of Thomas Bekynton
As part of this special group you will:
You will be a member of the Bekynton Circle for the duration of the project.
Thomas Bekynton (c.1390–1465) was Bishop of Bath and Wells from 1443 until his death in 1465. Bekynton was a generous benefactor who left a lasting legacy on the city of Wells. In 1451, he gifted the city its first reliable piped water supply, bringing fresh water from the Bishop’s Palace to the Market Place. Among his contributions, he was responsible for the construction of the Chain Gate, linking Vicars’ Close directly with the Cathedral. After his death, he left a bequest in his will to raise the chimneys on Vicar’s Close, creating the iconic skyline we know today. By joining the Bekynton Circle, you will continue this legacy.
Please get in touch if you would like further information or to discuss any aspect of the project in more detail. It would be a pleasure to tell you more about the areas you are most inspired by and the impact of a gift at this level.
