The Very Reverend Toby Wright, Dean of Wells
Following discussions within Chapter and with John Alvis, Chair of the Wells Cathedral Advisory Council, I am writing to inform you that Chapter is (as required in the Cathedrals Measure 2021) opening up a period of consultation on the future of the Wells Cathedral Advisory Council. As with almost every other Cathedral in the country, our view is that this committee has now concluded its work.
The original purpose of the Advisory Council (which replaced the former Cathedral Council) was to ensure that lay voices were heard in the life and governance of the Cathedral. We are pleased to say that this purpose is now being fulfilled in other, more integrated ways. The Chapter now includes many lay voices, we have expanded the professional staff team and we are committed to consulting widely and regularly through a variety of means.
We will continue to hold regular congregational meetings, which provide an open forum for discussion, feedback, and shared vision. In addition, we are deepening long-standing relationships and building new ones across the county, as part of our commitment to listening and responding to the wider community.
I remain most grateful to all who have served on this body over the years and for the vital and significant part they have played in securing the wellbeing and flourishing of the Cathedral.
Information on the formal consultation process can be found via the links below, and is available around the Cathedral and at the Cathedral offices. If you have any concerns or questions about this proposal and consultation, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at dean@wellscathedral.org.uk – my door is always open and I would welcome your views on this suggested way forward.
With my prayers and best wishes,
The Very Reverend Toby Wright
Dean of Wells
