Jesse Window Makes Finals in Hunt for the Nation’s Favourite Stained Glass Window

26 January 2026

Wells Cathedral’s much‑loved Jesse Window has been shortlisted in a national public vote by the Association of English Cathedrals to find England’s favourite stained glass window — and we would love your support! Find out more about the competition, being held by the Association of English Cathedrals, here.

Known locally as the “Golden Window”, the Jesse Window dates from around 1340 and is one of the finest surviving examples of fourteenth‑century stained glass in Europe. Its glowing palette of yellows, greens, blues and ruby reds was created using the then‑new technique of silver stain, which floods the Quire with a distinctive warm, golden light.

Remarkably, the window has survived more than six centuries of upheaval. It narrowly escaped destruction during the English Civil War, when much church glass was smashed, and was carefully removed and protected during the Second World War. More recently, a major conservation project completed in 2014 ensured its structure, colour and storytelling details will continue to shine for generations to come.

Now it’s your chance to help this medieval masterpiece gain the national recognition it deserves.

Voting closes at noon (GMT) on Sunday 1 February — Cast your vote via the Association of English Cathedrals website.

Every vote helps celebrate the beauty, craftsmanship and resilience of one of Wells Cathedral’s greatest treasures!
