Reformation Days are tailored to Key Stage 3 and 4 and sixth form students.
Reformation Days provide a unique opportunity to find out about how the Reformation directly impacted on the life of the cathedral, and a chance to look for clues in the fabric of the building and in the archived documents.
During a visit to the cathedral library and archives, students will discover the impact of printing and compare the illuminated Hayles Psalter of 1514 that is hand written in Latin, with the first printed Bible known as the Great Bible of 1541 printed in English. The day consists of a guided tour, a tutored session and a related activity (illuminated lettering, paleography, making a mini chained leather book, or a mystery to solve using source materials). We can also link with Glastonbury Abbey if you would like to combine visits.
The Education Room has been specially designed to accommodate school groups. Its secure access provides a contained space (complete with toilets and bag storage) that serves as a great base from which to explore the cathedral as part of a programmed day.
Schools book a class or an entire year group for a programmed day tailored to their subject and curriculum requirements (key periods in history, religious studies, art and architecture to name a few). The day usually starts with an opening welcome followed by activities and guided tours. We can accommodate large groups by rotating activities and provide space in the Nave to congregate (worship led by school chaplains is optional). The Education Suite provides a contained space (complete with toilets, lunch space and bag storage) that serves as a great base from which to explore the cathedral.
Depending on the age of pupils and the topic being covered, activities range from sketching, glass painting, making mini chained leather books, clay boss making, calligraphy, illuminated lettering and Be a Chorister workshops to name a few.
We can arrange for one of the cathedral canons to speak about Christian theology or lead an act of worship.
Wells Cathedral guides are renowned both locally and nationally as some of the best in the country. The Cathedral offers the services of these highly trained volunteer guides at no extra cost. School groups may wish to book a general guided tour, or one that incorporates special interest areas such as architecture, symbolism, embroideries, glass, carvings and vestments. Children go round in groups of 10 and must be accompanied by a member of the visiting school staff at all times.
Tours last approximately 1 hour and can add significantly to your enjoyment and appreciation of the Cathedral. Please book at least two weeks in advance.
Children enjoy exploring the cathedral in small groups. They can touch the stone and wooden carvings and enjoy the visual diversity of light, colour, art, architecture, stained glass and the display at the clock complete with jousting knights.
