Stained Glass Roundel Rediscovered in Chained Library

18 February 2025

We are blessed at Wells to have such a great number of medieval treasures in our stewardship. It came with great joy, then, the news that another had been found—quite literally—under our feet!

A medieval stained glass fragment, dating back to c. 1290, has been rediscovered at Wells Cathedral. The piece, once part of the Chapter House Stair window, was found safely tucked away under one of the book presses in the Chained Library by George Parslow, Library Intern, during a tidy-up with Librarian Jolene Stevens.

After the rediscovery, the Cathedral contacted Holy Well Glass, Wells, for a detailed conservation report.

The subsequent report revealed that this single sexfoil tracery element is originally part of the Chapter House Stair window (pictured). The uppermost tracery of this window is presently filled with modern glass.

The glass in question was removed for conservation by the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1967, and it is likely that these traceries were removed earlier for re-leading during the 19th or early-20th century and installed in incorrect positions, with some sections inverted.

Thankfully, the glass remains in good order despite the challenges, though it is clear that it will likely require recasing and cleaning in the future.

Moreover, this piece represents but a fragment of our substantial and unique collection of medieval stained glass. It is for projects such as this, caring for and conserving the fantastic relics and delicate fabric of Wells Cathedral, that vital funds are continually needed.
