Glorious Stonework Revealed

March 2024

While the Cathedral was being prepared for filming this month, the beautiful 20th-century embroideries hanging in the prebendal stalls by Lady Alice Hylto were temporarily removed, allowing a rare glimpse at the stunning stonework beneath!

These stalls, with their ornate stone canopies and beautiful patterned interiors were the work of Anthony Salvin.

As part of the mid-19th century restoration, Salvin was commissioned to attend to works in the Quire by Dean Richard Jenkyns (1845–1854), and replaced a set of rather plain, disproportioned, and rickety oak stalls with the beautifully crafted seats we see today.
